ASUNAFO SOUTH DISTRICT ASSEMBLY HOSTS PRESIDENT MAHAMA FOR LAUNCH OF SOLAR-POWERED IRRIGATION PROJECT

The Asunafo South District Assembly had the honour and privilege of welcoming His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, to Kukuom for the official launch of a solar-powered irrigation project under the Government’s Feed Ghana Programme.

The project covers a total of 60 hectares across six communities, namely Kukuom, Nobekaw, Dantano, Sankore, Asibrem, and Kwapong, and is aimed at promoting year-round vegetable production while reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported tomatoes, onions, and peppers.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The solar-powered irrigation system will provide a reliable and sustainable water supply for farmers within the beneficiary communities. The project is expected to:

Lower agricultural production costs through reduced energy use
Reduce carbon emissions and promote climate-smart agriculture
Strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic vegetable industry

Farmers participating in the project have already begun receiving improved seeds, organic fertilisers, agronomic training, and digital advisory services to enhance productivity and efficiency.

Market Access and Value Addition
To ensure predictable and reliable markets for farmers, FarmAids has been introduced as a guaranteed buyer under the project. In addition, a packhouse facility will be established to provide grading, sorting, packaging, and cold-chain services, thereby reducing post-harvest losses and improving value addition.

The project is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Presidential Remarks
In his address, President Mahama explained that the initiative forms part of a broader 2025–2028 national agricultural development plan focused on expanding irrigation infrastructure, strengthening agricultural value chains, and increasing production of key commodities such as rice, maize, soybeans, vegetables, cassava, poultry, and cashew.
